Paul writes in his first letter to the Corinthians that, “The body is a unit, though it is made up of many parts; and though all its parts are many, they form one body. So it is with Christ…But in fact God has arranged the parts in the body, every one of them, just as he wanted them to be. If they were all one part, where would the body be? As it is, there are many parts, but one body.”
Grace Harbor Community Church believes that college students are to be members of the body just like any other member is a part of the body. We, therefore, don’t want to sever them off from the rest of the church community by giving them a specific compartment within us so that they only know and serve each other. Rather, what we encourage through biblical church membership is that each student be an integral part of the body by doing things with the body as a whole. That means that what we see are things like college students helping with children’s ministry, young married couples spending time with them, and groups of students eating in the homes of families within the church. We want the church as a whole to be our main ministry to them. We believe that this is good for everyone. Our members who are not college students need to be encouraged by the zeal and fervor for the Lord that is characteristic of college students who are growing in their walks with Christ. In the same way, we want our students to be blessed by the experience and persevering faith of those who have gone through college and other stages of life while following Christ.
We do see the benefit, however, of college students getting together with other students. Living life together as Christians with others who are going through the same challenges and experiencing life the same way can be encouraging and challenging in a way that also builds us up in Christ. Therefore, we invite and encourage all of our college students to participate in what we call Christian Student Fellowship.
